TEN

It’s pouring.

Actually, that word is an inadequate description because it truly feels like the sky is punishing us all—for what, I’m not sure.

It’s the kind of rain that renders an umbrella useless within seconds of trying to face off against the gusts of wind, and the downpour over these last few days makes it feel like we’re underwater.

Tori and I only leave the safety of our little space to run to the mess hall, load up with snacks, and sprint back. She, of course, does the actual running while I just succumb to looking like a drowned rat.

One would think that all this time holed up would make me exceedingly productive, but I spend most of the time watching makeup tutorials on YouTube while Tori does rounds of pushups and lunges in our tiny space.

Being cramped up does spur her into a sudden burst of cleanliness, though, so I count that as a win.

On the third day of being stuck inside, Rebecca arrives at our door, announcing that all staff is expected in the mess hall. She’s waterproofed from head to toe, dressed as a full-time fisherman who goes scuba diving on the weekends, whereas Tori and I share a garbage bag for cover while we walk.

“God,” Tori groans, trying to squeeze the water from her long hair. “We’re turning into fish at this point.”

I shake my arms, sending little drops of water all over our favorite table. “Might as well be.”

“Well, at least everyone looks as miserable as we do,” Tori says as we sit down.

“The rain has somewhat subsided,” I offer, trying to stay optimistic. “Now, instead of pure violence, it’s—”

“A fistfight we’re all losing?” Will suggests as he slides in beside me.

I chuckle at that way of putting it. “Yes.”

“Well, this should make things a little better,” Bellamy says, approaching with a gigantic tray in his hands.

I inhale the buttery scent of baked goods and eye the beautiful blueberry muffins before me.

“Yes, yes it does,” Tori confirms, reaching for one immediately.

“You’re an angel,” I tell Bellamy before I take my first bite.

Tori glances between the Moreno brothers. “Why do you guys look so smug and dry?”

“I don’t know what you’re referring to,” Bellamy says innocently.

He takes the seat beside her—a rare move, considering he’s usually behind the counter and ordering people around in the kitchen.

“Not buying it,” she says after swallowing a sizable bite. “Although, these are a delicious distraction.”

“The same could be said about me,” Bellamy retorts.

Tori lets out a somewhat uncharacteristic giggle, and I glance at Will, who smiles and shakes his head.

“Attention, attention,” Rebecca calls out from where she stands between all the occupied tables.

I glance around quickly, noting that the entire crew is in attendance.

I see only half the counselors, which makes sense, since some of them have to stay behind to watch the campers, and I almost pity them. If being stuck in a room with Tori for days induces a sense of mild cabin fever, I can’t even imagine how they’re faring.
